Sharpening serrated knife edge with sandpaper - stefanwolf88

materials
- abrasive, a square of sandpaper, ?P180
- a wooden skewer, a skinny round rod
- binder clip, paperclip, use it to secure sandpaper tightly around skinny rod, its also your handle

the serrations are chisel ground,
so grind one side only until raise burr
grind each serration separately
also give a few passes over entire serrated section ,
not too much dont want to grind down the tips too much

then release the sandpaper from clip,
and use the paper square backed with your thumb
on other side of knife to remove burr

feel for burr to make sure its gone
repeat as needed

no cutting demo or text or talking ...
but its clear and simple enough demonstration to follow

Thanks

also, sandpaper has a grain smiling smiley
the paper backing has a grain grinning smiley
like wood has grain
or newspaper has grain,

the sandpaper bends smoother in one direction than the other
so if you want it to bend and warp smoothly around a skewer,
figure out which direction bends smooth BEFORE
you cut off a strip

I don't agree with everything advised in these two videos, but he's close enough to get you a sharp knife:

The entire video is interesting, but the way he uses blocks at the end and why he does it is a neat trick :

I've never seen that before. Good idea but I wonder if it would have some effect on the edge to be running the blade out over the wood like that. I'm not sure. Definitely the nicest looking boxes for stones I've ever seen, really nice stuff.

Cliff,
I saw that video a little while ago, that is a neat trick with the blocks at the end of the stones.

That paring knife is an insanely detailed process, it shows a lot of activity that I don't think accomplishes anything productive.

Cliff,
I was thinking the same thing. I would have started at a lower grit for the flat side, gone up to the 1k stone, then the 3k, 6k, and stropped. Even if you use the Tormek for the hollow grind, I don't see the need of all the lapping films.

I like tormek machines - for a tradesman can be very useful piece of equipment
